چکیده

Background The purpose of this non-randomized retrospective study was to investigate outcomes of minimally displaced, proximal 5MTB fractures, treated by a below-knee walking cast or a functional elasticated bandage with a support of a flat hard-soled shoe. Methods A consecutive patient series was divided into two groups: the cast group (CG) and the functional group (FG). The subjects were radiologically and clinically evaluated according to Mehlhorn and Lawrence-Botte classification, and AOFAS Midfoot score, respectively. Results 154 patients were followed up for a median of 15 months (range 12-24). There was no significant difference (p > 0.05) among the outcomes of each fracture pattern regarding the treatment choice. However, an earlier return to sports was noted in the FG, while Type-3 fractures achieved the worst results. Conclusion Type-1 and 2 minimally displaced 5MTB proximal fractures can be successfully treated conservatively without weight-bearing restriction and without benefit of a cast with respect to a functional elasticated bandage. Level of clinical evidence level III retrospective comparative study.

Designing a Prognostic Scoring System for Predicting the Outcomes of Proximal Fifth Metatarsal Fractures at 20 Weeks

Background: Fractures of the proximal fifth metatarsal bone are among the most common fractures observed in the foot and their classification and management has been subject to much discussion and disagreement. In this study, we aim to identify and quantify the effect of possible predictors of the outcome of the treatment of proximal fifth metatarsal fractures. Methods: Patients with established...

The Value of Early Mobilisation in the Treatment of Colles’ Fracfures

Unilateral Colles’ fractures in 187 patients over the age of 55 years were Studied in a randomised prospective trial: 97 fractures were minimally displaced and were treated either conventionally or in a cr#{234}pe bandage; 90 displaced Colles’ fractures were reduced and of these 47 were treated conventionally while 43 were encouraged to mobilise the wrist in a cast which restricted extension. Functional Outcomes for Nonoperatively Treated Proximal Fifth Metatarsal Fractures.

Fractures of the proximal fifth metatarsal are relatively common and can be treated with a variety of treatment modalities. The goals of the current study were to answer the following questions: (1) Is there a difference in functional outcomes with different nonoperative treatment modalities for avulsion and Jones fractures? (2) What is the long-term functional impairment? This study included 5...

Diagnosis and management of metatarsal fractures.

Patients with metatarsal fractures often present to primary care settings. Initial evaluation should focus on identifying any conditions that require emergent referral, such as neurovascular compromise and open fractures. The fracture should then be characterized and treatment initiated. Referral is generally indicated for intra-articular or displaced metatarsal fractures, as well as most fract...

Fractures of the proximal fifth metatarsal: keeping up with the Joneses.

Fractures of the proximal fifth metatarsal are among the most common fractures of the foot. History, physical examination, and subsequent radiographic work-up can help with the diagnosis of such a fracture. Many fractures of the proximal fifth metatarsal can have an associated prodrome, thereby establishing a level of chronicity to the problem. Identification of the location of the fracture pla...
